Strategy Bites & Bits with Jaishon Scott

"You have to build confidence in people and allow them to grow their confidence by giving them opportunities, allowing them to bump their shins. And then you don't just do that by continuing to do the same thing over and over again. You have to learn new skills. So if something didn't work, what can we learn that is new that might allow us to get to that outcome that we're looking at?"

My next guest on Strategy Bites & Bits is Jaishon Scott, and I fully admit: he is one of my favorite people. If you don't know him yet, Jaishon is someone who embodies what I call purposeful positivity. It’s not naive or blind optimism, but the kind of drive that says, "We're going to figure this out. Together."

What Jaishon and I examined more closely:

  • Leadership is a formula of confidence AND competency. And not simply your own. When building teams, great leaders don't just hand people opportunities and hope for the best and disappear.

  • Professional success is a team sport. Winning isn't me-vs-you. It's how do I bring everyone along with me?

  • Education has to meet students where they are. We do students a disservice when we resist change out of fear. We need to embrace the hard problems and move from a zero-sum mentality to one of mutually reinforcing benefit.

Watch the full conversation below for more on Jaishon's personal journey, the Cristo Rey work-study model, and what it looks like when you bet on young people.
